Major C. R. Attlee (Labour, btepney) in the House of Commons, inoved a resolution to apply the Ottawa Agreement to the Irish Free State. He pointed out that during the, recent dispute, gnd during the operation of Britain’s special duties against Irish products, if a settlenn it were reached, the Irish Free State would-be left to be created as a foreign country, or as a Dominion, without any special agreements.
Mr Thomas said that the amendment proposed to give a premium to the Dominions after seqkii.g to repudiate obligations. It was' known before the Ottawa Conference that the free entry of Dominion products into Great Britain was to cease on November 15th if an agreement were not made. Britain having failed to reach an agreement with the Irish Free State, the free entry of the Free State's goods to Britain must cease. Mr Thomas asked .did the Opposition really believe that workers or trade unionists in a country accustomed to collective bargaining approve of giving special privileges to those who repudiated obligationsP The. Government would welcome the earliest opportunity of making a trade agreement with the Irish Free State, but it must be an agreement within the British Commonwealth of Nations. The Irish Free State would not expect to remain within the Commonwealth for economic consideration and outside of it for political considerations.
The amendment was defeated by 255 votes to 32.
