MOTOR FATALITY
DRIVER OF CAR STANDS TRIAL.
INTOXICATION ALLEGED.

The trial commenced at the Supreme Court of Paul Olsen Sabo, aged 41, a taxi driver, and a Norwegian, who was indicted that, while in a state of intoxication, he was in charge of a motor car, and that his act or omission in relation therto did cause the death of William Edwards. The prisoner pleaded not guilty. The evidence for the Crown showed the accused drove in an erratic manner from Hunter street along Customhouse Quay to Whitmore street, at a. speed of 25 miles an hour, and that entering Whitmore street, he ran down the deceased, "who was crossing the road, and who died at the hospital the s ame night without recovering consciousness.
Police officers and medical witnesses said the accused was suffering from the effects of liquor, A constable who examined and tested the car said the footbrake would not act. The handbrake acted mostly on one wheel. After the accused’s car hit Edwards, it slowed down, and then went off again; and was followed by a man in another car.
