FREEZING DISPUTE

There are 450 to 500 men effected in the Auckland province. The freezing companies have announced that they cannot allow operations to he interrupted, and that they intend to secure other labour. Three thousand crates of chese required to complete the homeward cargo of the Tekoa were not available to-day. The Reimiera was to have commenced loading butter to-day, but none was available. She is also to load cheese and meat here.

CONDITIONS AT HAMILTON. Hamilton, October is. About two dozen men applied at the Horotiu freezing works this morning for work under the conditions offered by the company yesterday. Mr R. Spiers, works manager,, stated to-day that some of these men had been taken on to assist the foreman in killing to maintain the town supply. He gave further assurance that there was no likelihood of a meat shortage in Hamilton.

Apart from the abattoirs the works are deserted, all strikers having departed yesterday. TWO WORKS IN OPERATION. AUCKLAND, -October 18. Both the Westfield and Southdown freezing works are in operation to-day, the response to.a call for labour being adequate. At Westfield it is reported that all departments are working, and at Southdown, in all departments for which labour was sought.

There was a rush for jobs at grading stoi-es and some men were unsuccessful. These immediately went to Westfield. As far as is ascertainable no union men are working. Some assembled outside the gates hut there was no- suggestion of trouble.
