DROWNING FATALITY
EVIDENCE. AT INQUEST. The inquest into the death of William l.ilatthews, who was drowned at Three Mile, last Tuesday, was held at Okarito 'last week before Mr N. E. Friend, the deputy Coroner, and 'a jury of four, consisting of Messrs D. Denuehy, H. Fiieml, W. MoCluggage and u. Friend. Tin' verdict was that death was due to drowning. Tim evidence showed that deceased wa s employed ’Art Mr F. Poole, of Ukarito, to carry goods to the dredge on the Five -Mile. Tie left Okar,tU>' on February 23rd, with a jinker and tv\o horses, to take a load of goods to the dredge. He had to cross the lhree ;.Mik Creek, which was in a dangerous c‘uilclition. Ho drove into the Creek, and was immediately washed down to the sea. Unable to swim, he was overpowered bv the current, and his body was recovered some hours later ill the breakers.
