RAILWAY SERVICE

PROMOTIONS AND TRANSFERS. LENGTHY LIST ISSUED WELLINGTON, February 26. The first issue of a personal service order to the various stations throughout the Dominion during the week has been awaited with expectancy for the past six w-eeks by the members of the clerical division of the Railway Department, and the list contains over 300 names, of members, mostly on promotion.

There is also a number of retirements of members on superannuation. These men have reached thirty-five years' service, and, : with more members reaching tfje term, promotion for many of the junior members of the service will be- more rapid than in former years. It is also probable that several stations in country districts formerly controlled by a stationmaster will be added to the growing list of tablet stations owing to the decline in the traffic offering, and the fact that in the majority of places changed to tablet stations the Department hae gained by placing porters in charge of the stations.

The principal appointments made axe:—ln the North Island, Mr R. P. Gillies, senior clerk Ln the Chief Accountant’s office, is promoted to assistant accountant. Mr F. C. Huse, audit inspector for the North Island; Mr J. H. Monteith, audit inspector for the South Island. Mr R. J. Stirling, formerly of Dunedin, is promoted to chief clerk in the traffic superintendent's office, Wellington. Mr S. C. D-oyle, formerly stationmaster at Westport, taken control of the road service at Wellington. Mr G. L. Anderson, who has been in the position for some time, is now appointed to chief staff clerk. To the positions of assistant traffic managers, Mr N. A. Woodger, formerly well known in the athletic arena, is appointed to Auckland, Mr J. Aitken to Wellington, Mr A. Clark to Christchurch, Mr W. M. Cole to Dunedin.

Other appointments in the South Island are: —Mr W. Rodgers, train running officer at Christchurch, is appointed stationmaster there, in place of Mr A. C. Brown. Mr Brown has been appointed goods agent, in place of Mr Vance, who is retiring on superannuation. Mr C. L. Pope, formerly of Balclutha, goes to stationmaster at Dunedin. He first joined the service there as a cadet. Mr N. A. Marshall

is appointed goods agent at Dunedin. Mr A. L. Smith, stationmaster at Greymouth, confirmed. Mr 'A. L. Dyne, stationmaster, Lyttelton, Mr O. J. Williams to Timaru, Mr J. Paterson to Oamaru, Mr G. H. Chambers to Ashburton, Mr I. H. Blackmore to Addington, Mr J. F. Rasmussen to Westport, Mr J. Ryall is appointed assistant goods agent, Christchurch, and Mr G.. C. M’Conagle assistant stationmaster, Mr Dew to traffic inspector, in place of Mr A. T. Pittaway, who takes over the waggon supply department. Mr G. D. Smart to chief relieving officer, and Mr H. C. Langford to business agent, Mr C. A. Legg to the transport office, and Mr W. E. Aylirig to goods master. Mr W. Craw, of the train-running staff, is appointed audit inspector at the head office. Mr F. H. M’Ewin, stationmaster at Temuka, has been appointed stationmaster at Springfield, and Mr J. J. M’Aloon, stationmaster at Pnpamii, becomes stationmaster’s clerk at Addington. More than 200 other appointments have been made in The regrading, involving . several st-ationmasters and clerks in the Canterbury, Otago and Southland districts.
