MONTH’S GAOL. FALSE PRETENCES CHARGES. 'By Telegraph—Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, January 26. “The whole tiling was a hoax, really blackmail,” said Chief-Detective Carroll to-day, when Joseph Hepburn, 46 years of age, a private inquiry agent, faced three charges of false pretences, concerning sums of money received from Eva Nicholls. Hepburn pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one month’s hard labour. The police said that be pretended to draw up a bond- covering an agreement with another party over a domestic matter, but he really did not do threepence' worth of work on tile case. A FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH, January 26. A large wooden shop with dwelling attached was almost destroyed by fire at Lyttelton early this morning. 'I he tenant, C. Cording, and his wife, were 1 wakened by smoke which was suffocating them. ‘With difficulty they gained ■in exit through a window in an upper storey leading on to a corrugated iron verandah and then slid down the veiitidah’ posts:' They lost a good deal ol furniture. The Brigade had a hard fight to prevent the flames spreading to other buildings.
