AUCKLAND COMPETITION. ■ECONOMISING- ON RELIEF WAGES. AUCKLAND, January 20. A novel competition, in which a prize was awarded for the most economical and nutritious menu for one day, upon relief workers’ wages, was held at New Lyn it. The prize, a 51b chest of tea, was awarded to Mrs Hailey, of Bollard Avenue, New. Lynn. In making the presentation, the Mayor of the borough 'Mr (5. Lawson, said that the competition had been a great success. He emphasised -the importance of economy in the home and said the competition -would assist housewives who were striving to provide cheap meals at tlipresent time. The winning menu, which was prepared for a famdy of six, represented a total outlay of only 3s Id. and includeu 6d for one brown loaf, 6d for steak, 2d for suet, 5d for one quart of indk, 6d for sausages, 3d for jib ot butter, and 9d for extras, to provide vegetables sugar, rolled oats, salt, pepper and tea. Competitors were required to detail the cooking arrangements. In the case of the winning entry the breakfast consisted mainly of Rolled oats and sausages, with brown bread. Lunc-h inolttded soup made iroin fish heads or back 'boincp .and rridnit for dinner was made up of suet dumpling and plain suet pudding, steak and vegetables. The list was prepared to cover the requirement for three adults and tine, cniluien.
