The city was soon ringed with grass fires causing dense smoke. Two persons died from the effects of the heat, while at least 100 persons collapsed, and received medical attention. ,

Even the Great Harbour Bridge was afieeted, to-day by the heat, the steel expanding, and lifting nearly seven inches at the crown.

Thirteen persons were rescued today from drowning in the Manly Surf.

Most of the country towns report temperatures of from one hundred to 115 degrees.

There was a cool change, which brought relief to the coastal districts in the evening.
