AUTHORITIES APPOINTED

WELLINGTON, January 21

Tlio Minister of Transport, Mr J. G. Coates, announced to-day that the following had been appointed members of the Central Licensing Austhority in accordance with the terms oi the Transport Licensing Act oi last session Mr Justice Eraser (President of the Arbitration Court), Chairman; Mi S. S. Allen (Solicitor, of Morrinsville, formerly Administrator of Western Samoa); Mr H. B. S. Johnstone (fanner, Otaia, Waimate, ox-Chairman ol Waimate County Council).

The personnel of the nine District Licensing Authorities will he announced in a few days. Eroadty speaking, the Central Licensing Authority will he a co-ordinating body, which will have wider powers in relation to general questions of control than will he vested in District Hoards. Its members will be appointed f° r three years, and they may be re-ap-pointed. The control of services within specified districts will he carried out by the Licensing Board concerned; but the Central Authority will issue licenses for services operating over an area extending into two or more districts. 11l considering application for license, the Central Authority will take into account any representations made to it by the Board through any part of those district the proposed service will run. In other ways, the Central Authority will work in bringing about co-ordinat-ion of services, and its functions, as prescribed by the Act and will form an important part of the administration of the new law.
