WARNING BY PREMIER. WORK INSTEAD OF DOLE. (Australian Press Association ) SYDNEY, January 18. Hon. Mr Lyons, Federal Prime Minister, acknowledged a. civic welcome to Svdn’ey to-day and appealed to the community and to every section of political thought to help in getting men off the dole and into profitable employment, when they would become an asset, instead of being a liability. The Prime Minister went on to allude to the disturbing position that exists in regard to the floating debt oi Australia. He said that in June, 1929, the floating debt of the Commonwealth in Australia and in London, was fiftytwo millions. In December of 1961 it was £78,8-26,00!); and it looked, he Said, Us though it would be eighty-five millions next •tune. The people, he said, must not he D«ceived by the apparent improvement in the general situation. There M'ere forces outside of Australia that would seriously affect Australia s position, and unless some settlement of the international difficulties were reached then the economic position could not improve. The Australian Banks were carrying the Government’s on till the end °of February, but there was no provision aftqr that. The Governments, as a whole, wanted £8.500,000 for public works. That was one of the chief problems which the Loan Council would have to face at the end ol this month. THE LANG GOVERNMENT. WILL NOT BE DISPLACED. (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 19. Mr Mark Gosling, chief secretary of the Lang Cabinet, declared that there was no hope of the Lang Government being displaced till the end of its term of two years. The State Labour Party is thoroughly united, despite press propaganda.
