AN INQUEST
SOUTH WESTLAND TRACEDY. FINDING OF THE CORONER An inquest was held at M tainui on Jan 12th by P. Graham Esq. J.P. acting Coroner and a jury consisting of Messrs A. (.'. Graham, Leo. Bannister, Peter McCormack and Frank Martinis touching the deaths of Elsie Paterson aged 43 and Hilda Johnson aged 50, members of the Modern Dress Coy., of Auckland. The evidence gave particulars of the finding of the car in the creek and the search and, subsequent discovery of the bodies, one on the afternoon of the fatality and the other next morning, and the action taken wl ic.i led to the identification of the two deceased.
Both deceased were travelling by motor-car in South Westland. 1 hey drove into a. creek at Hendes Face. The stream swept the ear to the edge of the creek where there is a drop of 30 feet. They eventually decided to leave the car and were swept over the edge into the creek 30 feet below. It is a very rough creek. Both bodies were discovered a short distance from the car. The jury returned a verdict that Hilda Johnston ard Elsie Paterson, were accidentally killed by being washed over a 30 foot fall in a creek at Hende’s Face South Wesland, on January 10th, 1032.
