TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From West Coast Times, for week ending January 9, 1932). Mr Andrew Scott, of Karnngarua, has rerunilv improved his building and Ims made every provision for •supplying up-to-date accommodation. _Mini ng.—-Messrs Bauckc and Fiddes have gone out to the Wilberforce to continue tlu' development work on their claim at the Westland Reef. Messrs Pfahlert and party expect to have men on their claim shortly, and it is expected that other prospectors will also send men out soon do obtain stone for testing.

Customs.—The Customs duties collected at the port of Hokitika for the mouth of December, 1906, were as follows :—‘Spirits, 16s per gallon, £452 89 sd; cigarettes 17s 6d per 1000, £52 10s ; tobacco, 3s 6d per lb, £IBO Is 6d; wino 5s per gallon, £l2 9s 2d j tea, 2d p-r lb, £1 7s 6d ; sugar, lb, £122 6s 5d ; goods by weight- general tariff, £l3 l"s Id; preferential 5s 6d ; goods ad valorem, general £92 6s; total £932.13s lid. Beer duty £259 15s Bd. Same month last year.—-Customs duties £1,099 is id ; beer duty £257, Cricket.—A cricket match will be played this afternoon at Kanjeri between the Kanieri and Arahura Clubs. The following will represent Arahura: — 'Muir, Hearn, Cropper (2), Tainui (2), 'Mason, Martin, Haves and George. Oriental Bazaar.—There was again a large attendance at the Oriental Bazaar last evening and the stallholders were j kept very busy disposing of their various wares. The Volunteer Band further assisted by playing outside the Theatre, the music being appreciated. The Art Union an connection with the Bazaar was drawn last night under the supervision of the following committee:—Messrs Winchester, J. Lloyd, AlcNaughton, Jacobs, Alabin, Parkinson and Breeze. 'During the evening Air Alichel thanked the Secretary and all those who had contributed to the success of the Bazaar in particular Alessrs Kirk and An dr ewes. Kumara Hospital.—The committee of the Kumara Hospital yesterday entertained ; tlle patients at the annual dinner. The Kumara Band, under Conductor Richards, assisted at the function, which was greatly enjoyed by the patients. By a fortunate coincidence a party of visitors, which included Air. John Bevan, Air W. R. Cook and others, was present. and an enjoyable hour was spent. A number of toasts were honoured, among it he speakers being .Air Haines (chairman of the committee), Air Bevan, Air Cook and Dr Aiorkane. School Committee. — (The ordinary meeting of the School Committee wan convened at the Education Board Office last evening. Present ; Alessrs T. Robinson, J. Lloyd, EJ. H. Robinson, W. H. Shannon, King, Richard, if. J. Breeze and Ralfe, , A motion of sympathy with the chairman In his recent bereavement was passed and the meeting then terminated. Dairying.—A meeting of directors oft the Arahura Dairy Factory Company was held in the County Council Chambers. Present: Air B. Ward (in the chair), -Alessrs Perry, -Atichd, D. Bradley, J. King and J. Mclntosh. The manager, Air Cameron stated that over 14,000ibs of butter had been sold since the opening of the season. Glowing accounts of the progress of the factory were given by the country members.
