An accident occurred at the floodgate of the new water-race at Blackball, on Friday evening. Miss Lilian Williams in company with some friends, visited the water-race. The 'floodcate was rais' d, and fell on her left hand, severing the first joint of the second finger, and crushing the first joint of the third finger. Miss Williams received medical attention from Dr Bennett.

The death took place on Thursday at the residence of her ' nephew, Dr J. L. Wicken, of Reefton of Mrs Martha Louisa Prince, n*ho for a very long period had resided in Reefton. She was predeeased”by her husband many years ago. The late Mrs Prince u*as a native of the West Coast and 62 years of .age. She is survived by her daughter, and two sisters, Mrs Sadler, Nelson Creek, and Mrs H. Wicken, Reefton.

Among the strange objects picked up by motor tires, the live rifle cartridge which pierced a motor-car tine in a Wellington Street on Wednesday must he alone in its novelty. The motor-car linff been used extensively during the day for the conveyance of electors to.. polling booths. The bullet of the cartridge apparently pierced the side wall of the tire without puncturing the inner tube. The project base- of the cartridge was worn down by friction against the road, and the percussion cap was unprojected when the discovery was made. The driver of the car considers that he tv as lucky, as the cartridge might have detonated at any time, shattering the tire, and perhaps causing loss of control of the ear. The cartridge was one of the regulation .303;

The annual, meeting of the Westland Competitions Society takes place to night at the County Chambers at 7.30 o’clock. The business will include the election of a now committee, and as there are some vacancies those willing to assist are invited to attend, as well as all apxious to support the Society with a good membership.

Funds are again short this week for the full employment of the registered unemployed, both in town and country, and the money available has to be apportioned by tlie local bodies to the best advantage. This week a number of men formerly registered at Kuinara have been transferred to the Westland County list, making the position more stringent still in the future with the number now registered.

The Arbitration Court sat this morning, Mr Justice Frazer and Messrs Prime and Monteith presiding.' The claim of Rasmus Anker Madsen (a Koiterangi accident case) was partly heard and then adjourned to enable further evidence to be provided and the hearing of the claim of James E. Searle of Mananui for injury to a finger had been commenced, when the Court adjourned for lunch.

The Arbitration Court sat at Westport or. Thursday, but all except one of the cases set down were adjourned or settled out of Court. The case dealt with was that of William Taylor v. Westport Borough Council Plaintiff claimed compensation, on the ground that a muscle in one of his legs was injured while he was being conveyed to work to March 31st last, in a motor-lorry belonging to the defendants, He stated that the seats were not fixed to 'the lorry, and that the ride was rough. As a result oi the injury, he had to undergo an operation, and was in the hospital five weeks. The Court gave judgment for plaintiff for £22 8s with £l4 16s costs.

The di-pnie at the Dobson mine, near Greymouth, which has continued since October J, has ben settled. Advice has been received that the men have accepted the company’s terms, and in view of this it is the intention of the company to resume mining as soon as orders are received. The dispute arose when the company decided to “stand off” some men. The company will now reinstate 180 men out of the 300 who were formerly employed, said Mr O. C'. Dams chairman of the hoard of directors o. the Grey Valley Colleri-s on Saturday The first step to be taken by the company, however, was to reorganise the sales department so that customers would be obtained as soon as possible. New arrangements will come into* force when the mine reopens in regard to the payment of truckers. They were previously paid an hourly wage, but in the future, tlnv will be paid by the truck. The miners . will be paid a- hewing rate, as in the past.
