A CHALLENGE

INOCULATION FOR - CONSUMPTION,

LONDON, July .12

One of the most contentious medical topics during the last few years has been the question whether it is possible to prevent the occurrensce of consumpiou in mankind and cattle by special treatment in early life, says the medical correspondent of tire "Morning Post,”

Professor A. Calmette, of Paris, who lectured in London betore the Royal Society of Medicine earlier in the week, lias been concentrating for 30 years on this problem, and now claims that the injection, into infants of the vaccine known as B.C.G. (.liacilius Cal-mette-Guerin),, prepared by him ant Professor Guerin from specially* wea* ened strains of tubercle bacilli, esures this immunity without any risk to health or life.

Professor Calmette informed th Royal Society of Medicine that the vacine had been tried in most European countries on a large scale, and without any reported ill-results. In France more than 330,000 children had been so treated; in Rumania over 75,000; in Spain 10,000, and in the Far East some 120,000 all without any accidents. ' _

The anthropoid apes are even more susceptible to consumption than is mankind,' and before Professor Calmette stated his treatment in the case of infants the vaccine was tried on these apes. In the autumn of 1925 most'impressive results were reported from France, and in Great Britain, as well as elsewhere, it was decided to conduct an entirely independent examination of all sides of the problem. In France an independent and unbiased enquiry into the whole question \is proceeding under the auspices of the Academy of Medicine.
