Lowry won the toss. Runs came slowly owing to a steady attack and heavy outfield. Mills was caught at midoff.
The New Zealand batsmen generally gave a, poor showing. All experienced difficuty in timing shots. It was the slowest wicket encountered yet. Dempster and Kerr were dismissed before lunch. .The wickets of Talbot and Vivinn fell on the resumption. A timely start followed by Blunt and James, the former again scoring principally by off shots.
