Ihe annual Hockey Ball is the next on the dancing list and is to take place at the Soldiers’ Hail on Wednesday next. The hockey ladies are now busy in preparation and patrons’ wants will be well served. The Ross Orchestra is supplying the music which wi.l a treat. At a meeting of the Grey mouth Fire Board on Tuesday evening, dissatisfied with tlie facilities provided at Greymouth hotels/ for the escape oi the occupants in case of fire, the Greymouth Fire Board, which held its quarterly meeting that evening, decided to forward a strong protest to the Westland Licensing Committee, with the object of having what was described by one member as an “antiquated system,” replaced by modern faciliites. The discussion had its origin in the report of Superintendent P. Deere, who, after reporting that there hail been four alarms during the quarter (Oriental Hotel, scrub fire at the rear of Mr Perotti’s property, XJnion Hotel, and Dudley’s residence) continued: —I am sorry to have to report that four men lost their lives in the Union Hotel fire, through no fault of the Brigade, In my opinion the jnen were suffocated before I gave the alarm to the station, for the fire was out both sides of the hotel when I went out. The engines were at the fire in very quick time, and had three leads of water on the fire, which was dealt with in a veryshort time. The small damage to the building speaks for the good work of the Brigade,

The 1913 regulations fixing travelling allowances, overtime rates and lodging and relieving payments for public servants are amended by a notice in the “Gazette,” an increase in certain allowances being made. In 1913 officers receiving salaries of over £6OO a year were allowed 17s 6d a day for personal. expenses while travelling. It is now provided that 18s a day shall be paid, to officers receiving in excess of £SOB 10s a year. Officers on salaries of from £IOO to £4OO a year were previously allowed 10s a day for trav el ling. The scale is now 12s a dav for salaries between £l3O 10s to £312 with correspondingly higher allowances for public Servants receiving between £342 and £SOB 10s. ■ Those receiving under £l3O 10s receive “actual expenses;’! >ln special eases higher o r lower rates may be authorised. A lodging allowance of £3l 10s a year is to be paid to> officers in the first sub-division of class F of the professional division. The regulation of 1913 allowed £lB a year. Amended rates are provided for other .sub-div-isions. Where overtime rates are sanctioned in the professional and dermal divisions, they range from Is 4d an hour in the class up to £162 a year to 3s an hour fn>- officers receiving between £312 and £423.
