MOCK-MODESTY.
CRITIC OF WOMEN’S SPORTS. LONDON, July 4. “Mrs Grundy appears to have left England for Australia,” was the comment made by Mr W. Buchanan Taylor, director of Lyons, Ltd., . whose Women’s Sports Club is the largest in Britain. Mr Taylor was referring to a letter sent by an Australian, Miss Rae, denouncing women athletes.“We find that athletics encourage cleanliness, self-respect, and happiness, and increase efficiency,”, he said. “It is nonsense to say that sport makes them immoral. On the contrary, it keeps them from dreary street flirtations, to rwhicli other girls of their class resort in order to escape monotony. “Running shorts are not immodest. Everyone knows women’s street and evening dress is often more provocative. Quieter, more womanly girls could not be found. The Australian critic should- go to Berlin and see thousands of naked athletes to realise the hope-, less antiquity of her views.”
