STATE MINES. (By Telegraph,—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 17. An advice received by the Government to-day stated that the James and Liverpool State Mines, on the West Coast, resumed operations today, a satisfactory end to recent trouble having been brought about. The mines employ about 400 men, and all except about 15 returned to work today. it is expected that these, will return to-morrow, and that mining operations will resume at full strength.

FISHING LAUNCH PICKED UP. WANGANUI, June 17. The fishing launch, Advance, was picked up 12 miles from the shore, completely disabled, in a rough sea. it was towed into port by the steamer Titoki, last evening. INJUEST ON MOTOR VICTIM. WELLINGTON, June 17. Mr McNeil, coroner, returned a formal verdict that deceased died from injuries received when knoeken clown by a car in Jervois Quay, in respect to a tunnel worker, Myles Valentine, aged 37, who died at the hospital -following an accident on Friday night. The Coroner remarked on the poor lighting in the vicinity of the wharf sheds, and discounted any suggestions that the driver of the car, Francis Gregory Galvin, was under the influence of. liquor or was driving at an excessive speed at the time. TRAM RUNS OVER WOMAN. WELLINGTON. June 17. Knocked down by a tram in Hobart Street, Miramar, early this evening, an unknown middle-aged woman lies unconscious in a serious condition at the Wellington Hospital. The tram pulled up sharply. The woman was found wedged underneath, jack s being required to raise the tram sufficiently to release her. WELLINGTON, June 18.

The woman knocked down by a tramcar at Miramar last night is Mrs Florence Waterhouse of Onepu Road, Kilbirnie. The hospital reports her condition is very serious. AN APPOINTMENT. WELLINGTON, June 18. The appointment of Captain W. M. Bell of Wellington as Resident Commissioner at Niue Island is announced. He succeeds Oapt. A. A. Luckliam who has been transferjed to the Island of Aitutaki. OBITUARY. WELLINGTON, June 18. Obituary—Oapt. Thomas Harry Ohuilley, Marine Supt. of the Shaw Savill and Albion Coy. aged sixtv-two. Deceased first went to. sea in the early eighties and joined the Shaw Savill Coy. as junior officer in 1890. His first command was the old Maori ana later was master of the Company's first llangitira. After his command or other vessels he was in May 1915 appointed Marine Supt., which position lie held till his death yesterday. Deceased is survived by a widow and five daughters.

MAN MISSING. GISBORNE, June , 18. Richard Ansthriuther Burson, 25, missing since Tuesday evening, is believed to be drowned. His clothes and a hurricane lamp were found on the beach. He had been in the habit,

when fishing, of stripping and going out into the surf with his line. It is feared heavy .seas on Tuesday overwhelmed him. Eurson came from Australia and has no relatives in this country.

VALUABLE BEQUEST. V DUNEDIN, June 18. Under the will of the late Mrs Christina Davie, a bequest left to Patients and Prisoners Aid Society, is expected to amount to between five thousand and seven thousand sterling. FLOODS AT GISBORNE. TR AFFIC HELD UP. GISBORNE, June 18. All the service cars on the northern route were held up by Hooded streams this morning. The Governor-General’s party who spent the night at Matu were unable to roach Gisborne by road. Arrangements are being made to send a special train to Matuhera to bring them in.
