The damage done to the railway bridge in the centre channel by the heavy flood in the week before Faster, has been in. course of repair ever since. In addition to driving extra piles ol additional length to stiffen those spans affected by the considerable scour that had taken place, the Department lias been placing in front of the piens on the up stream side, a large quantity of very heavy stones, brought down from the C'obden quarry. These heavy boulders have apparently had the effect desired, in stopping the scour at the points endangered, but they have also had the effect of causing the main body of the stream to deflect further to the southern hank, with the result that the hank has been eaten into to a considerable extent, so mu oh so that the whitebaiters huts, which at one time were a considerable distance from the hank have all been engulfed and have disappeared. The encroachment on the hank on the south side of the stream will not have any effect on the course of the stream, or otherwise affect the bridge structure.
