EARTHQUAKE FIRES

AN INQUIRY. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) NAPIER, May 13. The Commissioner, Mr J. S. Barton S.M. opened an inquiry into fires following the earthquake of February 3rd. Win. Gilbert.!, Fire Sunt,, said that the first call was for the United Friendly Societies Dispensary, t-lien Henderson's chemist shop, then Rollson’s chemist shop. Owing to the fire alarms being thrown out of commission. the alarms came by messengers. All three were well alight when witness arrived. The water consequently gave out through the abnormal demand and broken mains. Water in the baths was tried but only one lead was available, the distance of pumping over 1,500 feet being too great to allow a suitable pressure. ■MMaaM—uayi—
