HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28. The Council met at 7.30 p.m.. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), J. King, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, G. Heinz, E. W. Hienan, A. C. Armstrong and Dr. Teichehnann. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. DEPUTATION. A deputation consisting of Messrs W. Robinson, E. C. T.oohey, C. Macfarlane, J. Cameron, J. Schroder, W. H. Shannon, G. Raine, and Holley, waited on the Council in connection with the flooding of Upper Sewell Street recently.
Mr W. Robinson said they were present to express their displeasure at the result of the Hooding of Sewell Street since the placing of the concrete drain. He pointed out the damage done to property by the continued flooding during recent floods. Prior to the Council putting in the drain, the speaker had personally waited on the Council pointing out the proposed drain would not carry the water that the old drain had always successfully carried. As a result of the drain being unable to carry away the flood waters much inconvenience and loss had been caused, and there was a danger to the health of those living in tfie vicinity. The Mayor said the Council were well aware of the facts, As soon as the Council’s finances allowed steps would he taken to endeavour to rectify the trouble. They were all aware of the extra flooding and were prepared to do their utmost to mitigate and remove the trouble, Mr Evans asked if any of tho deputation present had any suggestions to make to remove the trouble, It was absolutely necessary that something should he done,
Mr E. C. Toohey said the new drain was an absolute failure. It was a foolish expenditure to put in an 18 inch drain, to replace a 3ft 6in b_v 3ft 6in. drain. He had never before had to use gum boots to get t.o his home. Air J. Cameron also pointed out the trouble that the small drain had caused by flooding his property. Air Holley suggested that a 2ft drain bo put in oil the opposite side of the street.
The ATayor said the Council had endeavoured to remedy the matter hut had found that the level of the bottom of thei drain was almost at spring tide level. The Mayor thanked the deputation for their attendance and promised consideration. The deputation then withdrew.
The Mayor moved that Air J. C. Macfarlane be instructed to take the necessary levels with a view to finding a scheme to relieve the position. Seconded bv Air Evans and carried. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.
