A THIEF IN HOTEL

BLENHEIM, December 11
Just before five o’clock this, morning a room thief was discovered in the Criterion Hotel by guests whom he had disturbed. He decamped after stealing the sum of £5 in cash and a cheque for £7. Payment of the cheque has been stopped at the bank. He devoted his predatory attentions to rooms occupiecl by members of the Nelson representative cricket team, who arrived last evening to play to-day in the' Hawke Cup preliminary match against Marlborough, and it was from two players Alex Newman and C. F. Shuttleworth that he stole the money. The thief got clear away, N.Z’s. AUTO-GYRO. WELLINGTON, December 11. The first auto-gyro to reach New Zealand will arrive by the Corinthie on Tuesday, and will be assembled and tested at Wigram Aerodrome. It i.s expected that the machine yvill go to Timnrn first, although no definite itinerary has been 'drawn up. The pilot who will fly the auto-gyro has not yet been selected. POLITICAL DUNEDIN, December 12. At the request of a number of electors in the Dunedin North electorate, Mr W. R. Hayward has consented to offer himself as a candidate in the Reform Party’s interests at the next general election. Mr Hayward has resided at Dunedin practically all his life and has been prominently associated with business interests in the city. He was a director of the successful N.Z. and South Sea Exhibition r and is an ex-President of the Manufacturers’ Association, and has served on the Employers’ Association. His candidature has already met with promises of support from all sections of the community. COLLEGE MATCH. CHRISTCHURCH, December 13. Christs’ College eleven 443, defeated Otago Boys’ igh School 144, and 85, by an innings and 214 runs. CHEESE PRICES. WELLINGTON, December 13. London advices have been received here of full cream cheese realising a premium approximately throe shillings in one instance four shillings over stand* ardiscd. In another case second grade full cream commanded a shilling premium over the finest grade standardised.
