A cast marked by the presence of l>oth >.qulality and quantity in unusually large proportions appears in Colleen Moore’s first talking and singing picture, “Smiling Irish Eyes, 1 ’ which showing at the ' Princess Theatre , to-night (Saturday). Undoubtedly', more accomplished players are seen in this First National Vitaphone special than in any talking picture yet produced. An immense scene, representing an (Irish fair, was photographed and recorded from so many different' angles that Producer John McCormick required over fXX) people, capable of playing effectively 'before both camera and microphone, in order to represent properly this interesting portion of “Smiling Irish Eyes.” ■ Thus has the popularity of talking pictures placed a larger premium on talent, and all hut eliminated the “extra” player incapable ,oA’ giving interesting characterisations. Colleen Moore is ideally suited ior the role she portrays in “Smiling Irish Eyes,” in which she enacts a sparkling Irish girl. Both by personality and dramatic talent is she equipped ‘for a realistic interpretation, of this charming .character,’ f while !■ she acquired a delightful brogue; tp’Uhake her pbrtraynl /all the more convincing. She both sings and talks in this Irish romance. Opposite -.Miss Moore in the male load is-James Hall, whose ■ engaging smile .sapid excellent voice combine with splendid vability to make ihs characterisation effective. Like Colleen, he sings several melodise in “Smiling]. Irish Ev.es.” Two hvjniorous portrayals contribute generously to the comedy of the picture, due to tlie excellent work of the actors in* the parts, Claude Gillingwater and Robert Homans.
