CITY POPULATIONS
CHRISTCHURCH AND WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, September 23. A discussion regarding the respective populations of Christchurch and ' Wellington prompted inquiries being made from the Government Statistician's office. These show that the Wellington urban area, which includes Lower Hutt, Petone, Eastbourne and Johnson ville, has a population of 138,510. The Christchurch urban area, which includes New Brighton, Sumner and Lyttelton, has 126,040. If, however, Wellington city only is taken, the Wellington population is 108,500. Christchurch city has a population of 188,500, and with suburbs other than New Brighton, Sumner and Lyttelton, the total for Christchurch city and suburbs becomes 109,225. Such a comparison, however, greatly favours Christchurch, the urban area there including such comparatively distant suburbs as Belfast, Hornby and Halswell.
It may be stated that the only comparative areas recognised by the Census and Statistics Office are the cities themselves and the complete urban areas, and on either basis Wellington lias definitely the greateer population.
