, AVELLINGTON, Sept., 12. During the recent “fire-bug” scare at Christchurch, a reward of £250 was offered by the Underwriters’ Association for the apprehension of the offenders, and a question arose as to whether the police were entitled to benefit from tlie reward. The Afinister of Justice, Hon Air Cobbc, has now decided that it is competent for the members of the Police Force to accept the reward and the allocation has been left to C.>m m i ssi one r AVo him a nn.. It is understood that the bulk of the money will go to Constable Gillum, who was responsible for tlie apprehension of the Gray brothers.

ALAN FOUND DEAD

DUNEDIN, Sept. 12.

•AA'illiam Gordon, a single mail, aged 53 years, a carpenter by occupation, was found dead this morning at his residence, Taieri Road, Dr Fulton stated that he attended the deceased some dayß ago for bronchial trouble, and ho was-prepared to give a certificate ns to the cause of death. The usul police inquiry was made, and the Coroner accepted the doctor’s certificate. ' MOTOR VICTIM DIES. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 12. On August 12th. E. Reynolds, a wellknown AA'elington motor trader, received severe injuries in a motor car smash at Paparua. He had lain between life and death, at the Christchurch hospital ever since. He died to-day.

The police stated that accused asked a jeweller to show him some diamonds and one was later found to be missing. Accused had been discharged from Borstal this year, and was in employment, but' was dismissed through laziness,
