WIRELESS TALK
WITH GOVERNOR OF STRAITS SETTLEMENT. (Official Wireless.) (Received tins day at 12.25. p.m.) RUGBY, August 28. Sir Cecil Clementi, Governor of the Straits Settlements, who is paying a visit to the netherlands of the Indian Government, spoke by telephone from Java to Lord Passfield, Colonial Secretary at the Colonial Office this afternoon. This is the first time a Colonial Secretary lias communicated with the Far East by telephone from the Colonial Office, although Hon. L. S. Amery, at the House of Coinmons spoke to Mr Ormsbv Gore, Colonial-under-Secretary, in Java two years ago.. Lord Passfield expressed appreciation of the opportunity given him by >2>e netherlands of the Indian Government. He remarked that the Empires of the netherlands and Britain have many similiar problems and many grounds for co-operation in the East, and he welcomed the invitation to Sir Cecil Clemonti to visit the Governor-General of Java, and hoped future years might see a further mutual understanding between Dutch and British authorities overseas. Sir Cecil Clemouti said lie had had a wonderful reception in Java and had been much struck by the remarkable developments there.
