A telegram received to-day ated that the Customs Bill would pro-A bably be passed to-day. The spirits' duty has been increased to forty shiLp lings, while the underproof allowance,; has been restored. This means a 'reduction of five shillings and ninepence' per case on the original proposals brought down by the Minister qf Fin-bf ance. j.-v : A private letter received to-day conveyed news of the death of Mr D. Liridemann, at Bremen, Germany on May 23rd. The deceased was a resident of Hokitika for many years, and. tvas intimately connected with the Hokitika Fire Brigade.-for a considerable period, being appointed engineer when the steam fire engine was pur* ;., chased. He was also a member of the" Hokitika Borough Council, and a prominent member of the Kilwinning Lodge. He was a gunsmith by trade ~ and was located in premises next to|’,A Hannam’s butchery (now J. Johnson’s) Revell Street. He left Hokitika some thirty years ago.
