FIRE IN GARAGE,

OPOTIKI, August 13
A fire occurred in the garage of McIntosh and McKay last evening. Two cars were slightly burned. The brigade chd good work and saved the building. Both cars were found alight under the bonnets and appeared rather suspicious.

The Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe arrived from the north this morning and will attend the C.J.C. races to-morrow and trots on Friday. They return on Saturday evening.
MAN'S BODY FOUND
NEW PY MOUTH, Aug. 13
The body of a Native, Poki Martin, was found on the beach below a cliff near Motunui five miles from Waidara on Teusday morning.- Two residents went to Martin’s house and found a fire burning. .Searching they found his socks on the top of the cliff a quarter of a mile away. They saw the body on the beach which was recovered when the tide fell. An inquest will .be held this afternoon,
BANKRUPTCY ACT VIOLATED.
CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 13
On four charges of breaches of the Bankruptcy Act the Official Assignee to-day proceeded against Allan Howard, a bankrupt of Chaneys, a contractor. . Accused pleaded not guilty to all charges pan d was committed to the Supremo Court for trial. The Assignee said Howard’s business was on a large scale and he had failed to keep proper books or make fully known all his property. TARIFF COMMENT. AUCKLAND, Aug. 13. The opinion of timber merchants and others is that the new duties will have the effect of increasing the cost of building and incidentally the cost of living. One merchant doubted the wisdom of raising rates on sized and long timiber, which lie said New Zealand must import. Certain classes of imported timber might be eliminated from buildings but where it had to be used, the extra duty would be passed on. The Government has met us halfway said a jeweller referring to the modified duty on watches. NO HOPE. PALMERSTON N., Aug. 13. Tho “Standard’s” Bulls correspondent states no sign has been seen of the two men Victor Guinan. and Colin Campbell, who have been missing fdneo Monday afternoon, when on ft fishing expedition over the'bar at the mouth of Rangitikei river. Yesterday afternoon Campbell’s coat oamo ashore north of the river mouth. There is no hope for the safety of the two men.
