ASSISTED MIGRATION
RESTRICTIONS STILL IN FORCE
WELLINGTON, August 7
“Having lull regard to the present difficult economic and industrial conditions and the prevalence of unemployment e-visting/in the Dominion, the Government- decided that the rcstrie.tions that have heen placed upon assisted initiation during the past t’.vo years must continue,” says the annual report of the Department of Immigration, presented to Parliament to-day. “The re.-tri tod policy is; therefore. to remain in force until such time as there is improvement in the present situation.
“During the latter port of 1929 the Government decided to inaugurate a scheme for the training of New Zealand boys in farm 'work on similar lines to that administered by this Department in respect of English. public school boys. The Department having the requisite machinery was charged with the duty of administering this new s.-bemc. The necessary forms were drawn up and printed and organisations circularised but so lar the response from lads leaving school and desirous of taking situations on farms has heen very poor. With a view to stimulating the. flow of applications, publicity has heen given to,the scheme, hut unless applications are made by lads leaving school the scheme, cannot prosper as, the demand by farmers for such trainees cannot, be. met.
“The total number of arrivals in New Zealand from the United Kingdom and Ireland during the year ended March Hl,st, 1930, was 3309 (1.703 males and 1606 females'). Of the total 1790 were assisted to New Zealand by the Imperial and New Zealand Governments. The'- number of assisted immigrants is made up of persons nominated from New Zealand and of persons themselves applying for assisted past a god in London. The distribution of assisted immigrants for the four main centres during the year was as follows: Auc-kleocl -558, Canterbury 218. Otago 113, Wellington 645; and Westland 106.”;
