WELLINGTON, August 9,

In the House of Representatives the Prime Minister replied to the debate on the budget after which the House went into committee to deal with the, estimates.

A vote of ninety thousand sterling for the Legislative Department was under consideration when the House adjourned. An amendment that the vote be reduced by £1 as a protest against the Government’s failure to give effect to the recommendations of the Petitions Committee in regard to miners’ phthisis pensions was moved by Mr HolIbnd (leader of the I-labour Party) but was allowed to be defeated on the voices, after the Prime Minister had suggested that cases arousing dissatisfaction should be again referred to the Committee. He assured the House that if the petitions were again successful, the Government would give them as favourable consideration as possible. The House rose at 5.30 p.m. till 2.30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
