BANK RETURNS

The low prices ruling for wool, dairy produce, frozen meat, and other primary products are clearly reflected in the quarterly averages of the' six banks that are doing business in the Dominion. The deposits have contracted, and the advances have expanded very considerably. Salient features of the reurns, as compared with tlie June quarter of last year, may be summarised as under: — Government deposits increased by £2,305,294. Fixed deposits increased by £281,161. LINERS IN HURRICANE

OFFICER SWEPT TO DOOM.

AUCKLAND, July 13

Swept from the deck by a wave during the height of a hurricane, the Chief Officer of the Shaw Savill liner “Tainui,” Mr H. V. Seddall, was lost overboard on the night «f July 4th. while the steamer was en route from Auckland to Southampton.

The news of the accident was brought by the “Rotorua,” which arrived yesterday from London. ; The two steamers were m the vicinity of Pitcairn Island, when the, hurricane occurred. Seafarers describe it as the worst one in their experience. Owing to the blackness of the night and to the furious sea, all efforts to locate Air Seddall failed.

The third class quarters on the liner Rotorua were flooded during the storm, and minor .damage was caused.
