this day at 8.30. a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 17.
A gale of cyclonic, force, accompanied by torrential rain, swept the north coast of New South Wales and tlie southern border of Queensland yesterday afternoon, and wrought havoc to houses, farms, public buildings and churches in the Tweed river districts, Coolangatta and Hunter river valley. Telegraphic communication is entirely cut off for 24 hours. A number of Ilduses were blown off their foundations, and iron roofs were carried five hundred yards. Wooden churenes were wrecked and fences levelled in Murwillumbah district- where the rain fell in sheets, upwards of seven inches in a. few hours. , All the rivers as far south as Kemsoy are rising so rapidly that danger by flooding is imminent. , I The wind reached a velocity of 80 miles ari hour. j Residents describe the storm as the worst for fifty years. j No lives are reported lost. j The storm has moved New Zealamlwards.
