POWER BOAT RACING
A writes in the Christchurch Times referring to the Regatta at Lake Kanieri states: Five members of the Canterbury Outboard Club who took part in regattas at Kanieri and Westport during the Christmas vacation set out for Hokitika on Boxing Day. reaching their destination in the afternoon. On arrival they were welcomed by the officials of the Lake Kanieri Boat Club, and afterwards they visited the lake and viewed the course. Theye were delighted with the beautiful expanse of calm, well-sheltered water, admirably suited for the conduct of outboard races. A splendidly equipped clubhouse stands on the shores of the lake, and is replete with all the necessary equipment for the most exacting enthusiast. The’ course, which is triangular in shape, has been laid out and surveyed by Mr J. H. M’G'eorge, the local club’s secretary. Transportation of the visitors’ boats and engines from Hokitika to the scene of activities was carried out expeditiously, reflecting credit on all concerned. The following day, Friday, being wet, the visitors were unable to indulge in a practice spin, but they were hospitably entertained hv one of the members of the Lake Kanieri. Boat Club, who conducted them over the liimu gold dredge. On Saturday the day broke fine. Conditions being favourable, a. large number of spectators attending. Refrence is then made to the results of the racing. In the evening the prizes were presented at Hokitika- in the presence of a good attendance of local enthusiasts. Dir W. J- Radford, president of the Lake Kanieri Boat Club, congratulated the winners on their performances during the day. He spoke of the benefit derived from the presence of the Canterbury contingent who had given freely of their knowledge of the sport, and at the same time provided excellent competition. Messrs H. G. Lamb and C. Blogg made appropriate responses on behalf of the visitors, thanking one and all for past favours and the wonderful hospitality extended to them.
In common with the rest of New Zealand the sport has been taken up rapidly on the West Coast, and it is in a flourishing condition. One of the members of the Canterbury Outboard Club who has raced on most courses in New Zealand states that the racing conditions on Lake Kanieri are unequalled.
