The Senate witnessed a unique dramatic scene when William Vare, a multimillionaire, appeared in person to demand a seat which was denied him by the Senatorial Investigation wiiose members found widespread bribery in connection with' his election three years ago. It was the first time a non-mem-ber was permitted to speak in this manner. Partly paralysed Vare’s useless arm hung in a pocket, while under tremendous emotion, gripping a desk to prevent his falling he read a lengthy statement demanding justice and fairness. He accused other Senators of buying their way in. Vare’s physicians watched him closely as he pleaded in a faltering voice'. TARIFF INCREASES. (Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 6. The Senate voted several compensatory increases in the wool schedule of the Tariff Bill advocated by Chairman Smoot of the Finanoa Committee, as the result of the Senate’s increase of raw wool duty from thirtyone to thirty-four cents per pound. The duties were raised as follows: Scoured wool from thirty-four to thirty-seven, wool on .skin tiom twenty-nine to .thirty-to cents per pound; sorted or matchings wool from thirty-two to ,thirty-live cents propound.

(Received this day at 9.20 a.m.) ST. JOHN (Newfoundland), December 6. Of ten missing Bonevista bound schooners, eight have been reported though four are lost and the crews rescued. The others were balloted.
