It penetrates the Apennines Mountains between Bologna and Florence. llm cost was five millions. Largely owing to the extraordinary hardness of the rock, sixty-nine lives were lost in the process of the.work. The new tunnel reduces the journey between the cities mentioned from two and a half hours to ono hour. The total cost is £9,000,000.
