FIRE BRIGADES

DEMONSTRATION AT OTIIRA. On Saturday the annual Fire Brigades demonstration of West Coast Brigades was held at Otira in unfavourable weather, and the ground became very slippery. The results of the events are as follow: One man (dry), Browning Memorial, four teams competed: Hokitika 78 sec, Foreman Williams; Cobdon 84, 2, Westport 85 4-5 (including 6 sec penalty) 3,; Otira, blow out. Foreman Williams, winner of this event, is the oldest Brigadesmaii competing at the competition. Hose and standpipe event (wet), two men, Rose Gup, twelve teams competed: Grey 2, Kumara 2, Otira 2. Westport 2, Hokitika 2, Cobden 2. Grey won in 40 sec; Otira A team 2. 41 sec; Otira 83, 41 2-5. Grey team. Grant and Molloy, won gold medals and Rose Bowl. Three men disabled hose event (wet), eleven teams competed. Otira B team winning in the smart time of 47 4-5 sec; Hokitika 2, 49 2-5 sec; Cobden 3, 52 1-5 sec. Otira B team •(Wearn, Cohen and 'Purvey) put up a wonderful and faultless run. Five men and standpipe, Benyon Memorial. Six teams competed, Hokitika winning in the smart time of 29 .3-5 sec. Hokitika team: Steel, L. Ross, Williams, P. Ross and Thompson. At the finish of the last run in the event by Otira, an. air lock occurred, and resulted in a burst main, which necessitated finishing the Demonstration, and the five men. reel event had to be abandoned, the Committee deciding to divide the prize money evenly between the six teams nominated. The Russell Challenge Shield was won by Hokitika, the points being: Hokitika 39, Cobden 36, Greymouth 26, Otira 20, Westport 14. Capt. Ross accepted the trophy on behalf of the winning team. Trophies are to be returned one month before any Demonstration. A smoke concert was held in the evening.
