FEDERAL ELECTIONS

TO-DAY’S POSSIBILITIES. (Australian Press Association) SYDNEY, October 11. The Federal General Election ’ campaign, which is described as having been one of the bitterest on record, closed to-night with noise and frenzy. The roar of battle was heard loudest at North Sydney, where Air W. M. Hughes is having the hardest campaign of his career, and at Wentworth, where Mr Marks is fighting for his political life. Sir Littleton Groom (who opposes Bruce Government’s arbitration abolition policy) is expected to have a close call at Darling Downs, in Queensland. Air Maxwell (another Nationalist opponent of the Federal Arbitration Court abolition) is regarded, however, as safe for re-election at Fawkner. In Victoria, both the party leaders, Air Stanley Bruce and Mr Jim Scullin, expect working majorities. One section of the press expresses the opinion that neither side will achieve a decent majority, and that the election probably will culminate in a stalemate.

The belief is expressed, on the other hand, that if Air Bruce loses ground at all. it will be in New South Wales and Tasmania.

The polling to-morrow will be from eight a.m. till eight p.m.
