Of the larger works contemplated in South Wetsland, the continuation of the Great South Road beyond Weheka is of the highest importance, governing as it will, the progress of the territory which it taps. Mr O’Brien, M.P., has been moving in regard to this matter, and Mr T. A. Johnston, the District Engineer, confirms the information that a vote of £5.000 is being provided out of a special fund for this work. The road to be constructed will follow the first stage of the Fox Glacier track, but branches off to lead'to Fox river, the place for the bridge required at this crossing, as mentioned already, being now in hand. It is understood that the road will be formed in the first instances so as to permit the material for the Fox bridge to be conveyed to the bridge site, and when the crossing is made the road will be continued on to the Cook river crossing again to afford facilities for the transport of bridge material. Roughly the road from Weheka to the south side of Cook river will be about five miles, and from thence to rejoin the existing main road the new detour road will follow the south bank of the river. The prosecution of this work is one of high importance, and it is to be hoped once the matter is in hanc\ the road will be pushed on vigorously. To link up the Bruce Bay district with a good service >-oad will be of considerable prospective value, and to carry the highway lo that objective should be the first main stage of the undertaking.
