TIMBER INDUSTRY IN BRAZIL

In view of the increasing output of lumber from about 3UO sawmills in the Parana river district and eastward to the Atlantic coast, the Government proposes, a Reuter message states, that a complete timber survey of the region shall be undertaken. By the introduction of additional machinery the output of the mills should be greatly increased, and enough good building material provided for both home consumption and export to Europe. One timber company, with its own nulls, holds concessions over 6,000,000 acres of timber lands in addition to other large tracts leased for long periods. The lumber is shipped from Puerto Alegre, at the head of the Lagoa-dos-Patos and at the confluence of five rivers, all navigable for light draught stenmers. The port is also connected by rail with the north and south trunk lines crossing the southern States of Brazil.
