GLIDERS FOR SYDNEY
SYDNEY, August 15
If all goes well with Sydney Univrsity Gliders’ Club, at least two or three of the quaint and simple motorless gliders, now so popular in Germany, and not unlike ordinary motordriven aeroplanes in general appearances, will be hovering over Sydney by March or April of next year. In Germany, where £ven youngsters in thousands are cruising about the air in gliders, these machines have achieved non-stop flights up to 100 miles, and have attained an altitude of anyting up to 5000 tfeet. Gliders ought to be popular in Sydney, not only as a medium of thrilling sport, but also because of their comparitivc cheapness compared with the cost of ordinary aeroplane. If the students in the engineers section can design and contruct their own gliders—this is the aim, with the aid of an expert aircraft committee —it will cost them merely, £2O to £25 for the necessary material. On the ground of safety first, the club will definitely limit the number of non-technical members. • Studeiftsi at Melbourne University tfre also talking of a Gliders’ Club.
