FRIDAY, AUGUST 23rd. r lne Council mot at 7.30 'p.m. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), T W. DufF, A. It. Elcock, E. W. Heenan 1). J. Evans, J. King, A. C. Armstrong, J. L. Turner and Dr Teichelmrinn. Tlie minutes were confirmed and, out ward correspondence approved. The Mayor reported the Foreman had gone to Christchurch to enquire as to an improved tar-sealing plant and .in regard to cementing of Hume pipes. —Received. The action of the Mayor was approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Valuation Department, Wellington, advising that the amount of £'46 17s fid.had been credited to the District Fund Account, being th'e balance of subsidy on rates for year ending the 30th June, .1929.—Received. From Postmaster, Hokitika, intimating that telegraph pole which is in the road of the pipe line at Lake Kanieri will be removed at Council’s expense. —Received. From M.ss M. Halliday, Hon. Secretary, Hospital Ball Committee, asking for,, use of Town Hall on the 3rd, 4th, and sth. proximo.—Received and request granted. . From J. H. W. McGeorge, application for permission to install a septic tank and drainage shaft on Section 910, Hampden Street.—Received and request granted, . subject to right to order removal if a nuisance and to charge a fee if necessary. From A. Cowie, Stafford Street, asking for permission to install a septic tank on Sections 808 and 809, Stafford Street.—Received and request granted on previous terms. From L. Gooch, application to lease Part Reserve 801, Sale Street, Valuation Roll No. 7, on a year to year tenancy at an annual rental of five par cent of the unimproved value, to cover the wliole of Part Reserve 801.—Received and approved. From Messrs Atkinson, Dale, and Mather, Wellington, re rates, J. Smith, jjvner.—Received ; Town Clerk to reply.
From District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, intimating that delay in forwarding highway subsidy from the Ist April to the 30th June last was due to authority from Head Office ' being not yet to hand.-r-Received. From Onakaka Iron and Steel Coy., Onakaka, intimating that they were not yet in a position to quote for castiron pipes, as they were still awaiting arrival of machinery from England.— Received. From Auditor-General,, forwarding the balance sheet of the borough of
Hokitika for tliO year ended the 31st I March, 1929, duly, certified to be correct.—Received.- The Mayor moved * that a special meeting be called for next Wednesday, at 11.15 p.m. to certify, to the balance sheet. Seconded by Mr Elcock and carried. ! From the “ New Zealand Worker,” intimating that reports received in Wellington are still to the effect that • the West Coast has not yet recovered ’ from the recent earthquake, and that business has not yet settled down, and asking for a short letter giving a trim report of the position.—Received ; Town Clerk to reply. From Joseph Hatherley, Greymouth reporting on the necessary repairs to the Public Library, (after Mr Stevenson finished the job of putting ties through the building), and stating that the total cost would be £122, and alternatively the work could be done much cheaper if the cracks are not grouted, but intimating that this latter course would never be satisfactory; and (2) should the Council decide to dispense with any of the work, Mr Hatherley is prepared to do the remainder at 3s 9d per hour and expenses.—Received. Mr Evans moved the matter be referred to the Mayor and Town Clerk to look into and carry out if the necessary finance could be arranged. Seconded by Mr Duff and carried. From T. W. Barrowman, Sale Street, drawing attention to state of road near , bis premises and asking for earfy at : tention.—Received ; referred to Public 1 Works Committee to attend to. 1 REPORTS. H From Treasurer reporting receipts 7 £155 4s 6d ; payments £ll7 2s 4d; debit balance £791 4s 4d.—Received. Accounts amounting to £756 10s 8d were passed for payment. The Mayor moved that authority bn* 'riven to borrow from the Bank an overdraft up to £2,000. Seconded by ; Mr Evans and carried. The Mayor moved that the various rates and sanitary ifee as advertised lie struck and made payable. Second- . cd by 'Mr Elcock and carried, with the proviso that a rebate of 5 per cent be made if paid within thirty days. TENDERS. Tenders for gravel supply were opened from Mrs B. E. Coyle, fine at dump Is 3d, screened 2s 8d ; P. Coyle Is 8d J. Cameron 2s 6d. The tender of Mrs Coyle was accepted. It was resolved to call for further tenders for supplies of unscreened pit gravel. • ■' Air Elcock suggested that the Council meet once a month in future. There was some discussion, without any motion. There was an opinion voiced that it would be inadvisable at present to carry out the suggestion ' and the matter was allowed to drop for the present. The Council rose at 8.30 p.m.
