BOXING ASSOCIATION

GYMNASTICS AND BOXING

GREAT PROGRAMME AT PRINCESS

THEATRE

There .was a very large and enthusiastic gathering at the Princess Theatre last evening at an entertainment arranged under the auspices of the Hokitika Amateur Boxing and Gymnastic Club. The programme was divided into two parts. The first half was devoted to a very clever and versatile gymnastic exhibition of Mr Musson’s lady acrobats from Christchurch. This was a very bright section and was thoroughly enjoyed. The programme opened with a very clever exhibition of legerdemain which was a very clean performance. Then tlie star artistes, misses Marjorie Austin, Hilda and Monica Pipe, gave a pretty club-swing-ing, number that proved very popular and was heartily applauded. The young ladies followed with the Roman rings, excellently carried our, Mr Musson also taking part. An exhibition oif skipping by Mr Musson was a neat item, and was followed by Neville Moulen, a clever loxer impersonator. whose efforts were! excellently carried out and caused much laughter and appreciation. Then followed the spec’a’ Mature of the programme. A very clever and interesting exhibition by the three young ladies, with Mr Musson, of clever acrobatic turns. These were very cleanly carried out without effort, and time and again hearty applause rang out in appreciation of the effective manner and agility of the several performers, the tumbling, somersaulting and set pieces all being excellently done and the whole proving most en■oyable and being heartily nnplauded. A clever comedy skit concluded an excellent programme by the Christ hurch visitors, whose whole effort proved bright and entertaining. The second half off the programme was devoted to four boxing contests. Mr Musson was referee for the first two events and Mr W. O’Brien the two latter events. Each were well contested and proved very entertaining and enjoyable. Complete arrangements

had been made and the gathering con•luded shortly before 11 o’clock, the Black Hand Orchestra, which supplied riie incidental music, playing the National Anthem. The following are the particulars of the several bouts: W. Ritchie 6.9 y. W. Cook 6.4£. FourYfcwo-mimite rounds. Tin’s was.a ■apalile bout, both lads giving and taking punishment freely. Ritchie was awarded the bout the decision being a very popular one.

G. .Johnston 5.5 v. A. Vincent 5.4. Three two-minute rounds. This went to Johnston, who had had more ring experience though his opponent put up a very willing go. . ■Neville Moulen, Christ'hurch, 9.5, v. R. Wright, Kokatnhi. 9.5. Four twoIminute"rounds.'" This was a capital exhibition in which the former made m st of, the lending. In the third round, he. dropped from nn alleged low blow, hut after a spell the brut proceeded. The referee gave a draw, hut many on'ookers thought tl»e Christchurch visitor had a fairly easy win. The final bout was between M. Howson' bantam champion) 8.1 and N. Ro:fej Hokitika, 8.0. . Four twominutes rounds. This proved one of the best bouts of the evening. It was willing. ..throughout, but the champion had the better of the bout. He nearly had his onponent out in the third round and though the latter came back brightly for the final round, Howson went out a winner with many points in his favour to spare.

Cobbe added: T am already aware, however, that whilst manufacturers are desirous of using a large proportion of New Zealand leaf, there is objection to stating the precise percentage used in the mixtures. Alterations are found necessary in the percentage used, owing to variation in quality of the leaf, arid the desire to maintain the standard required by New Zealanders.
