WIDOW’S ALLOWANCE

PALMERSTON N., Aug. 6
In the Supreme Court, Justice Smith made an order increasing to £2 per week the allowance made Mary Brown, aged 79, from the estate of her husband, the late James Brown, a farmer of the Bush district. The petitioner said she had helped to stump and clear the farm, and fought hush fires. She was separated from testator prior to his death. The Judge held the present allowance was inadequate.
THEFT OF MONEYS. PALMERSTON N., August 6
A married man, 24, whose name was suppressed in the meantime, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court to the theft at various dates, between June 1 and July 29 of the sum of £2B 10s, thle property of the Combined Motors Ltd. A senior detective explained that the accused was a clerk and had been employed by the firm for some months.On July 29 it was reported to the police that the firm’s premises had been broken into and the ?um of £2B 10s stolen. Some doubt was felt and further investigations resulted in the accused admitting he had taken the money in snunll sums. Accused had a wife and child and a good deal' of 'sickness. 'He was remanded till Saturday‘ 'to enable the probation officer to furnish a report. Bail was allowed.
INJURED BY PETROL , EXPLOSION. f- ‘ CHRISTCHURCH, August 6. While men were salvaging cases of petrol at D. H. Brown’s store in Carlyle Street, one case exploded and injured William Simmonds, 29, married. He was hospitalled, but is not in a serious condition. It burnt his arms and legs. ’Firemen are still playing four leads of hose on the blazing debris. A MYSTERY SOLVED. AUCKLAND, Aug. 6. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of the scow “Herald,” after the vessel str,uck on Canoe Rock off Kawau Island on July 14th. last was unexpectedly solved when the “Herald” was located in deep water by the trawler “Thomas Currell.” After the mishap the “Herald’s” crew scrambled ashore to be rescued some hours afterwards by the Tofua, bound from Auckland to the Islands. .Meanwhile the schooner had slipped off the rook anddrifted to eastward. The Thomas Currell’s” trawl fouled the “Herald” in deep water and a portion of it was brought to the surface.
