SUPREME COURT. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, July 29. The theft us a servant of £414 brought Thomas George Gillespie, aged J 9, a clerk in the Lands Department for over 29 years, before the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court for sentence. After hearing counsel, his Honour said the case was not one in which any Court could grant probation. Punish; ment, alter all, was something more than a mere punishment Ifor the individual offender. Its deterrent effect had to he considered. The sentence was twelve months reformative. A SERIOUS CHARGE AUCKLAND, July 29. A widow named Adeline Pyle, was arrested on a- charge, that on June 27th. she unlawfully used an instrument on Amelia Gertrude Pipe, thereby causing the death of the said" Amelia Pipe. Accused appeared before Mr Hunt S.M. and was remanded to August cth. Bail was allowed in sureties of £509. Miss Pipe was 23 years of, age and had been house-keeping for her father at Waibi. She was admitted to the hospital there on June 18th. and died last Friday morning.
