THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK. It is impossible to dissociate the retarded development of the northern part of the South Island, and, in relation to it, of the South Island as a whole, from its isolation. The same has been true wherever else communication and transport have been discontinuous or difficult. The best, illustration of this, to Canterbury minds, is afforded by the long isolation of the West Coast, ended by the opening of the Otira tunnel, with annually increasing advantage to the people of both Coasts and, since economic benefit is never constricted but always diffuses itself, to the Avhole Dominion. —Christchurch Btar.
