HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, JUNE 14th. The Council met at 7.60 p.m. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, G. Heinz, J. L. Turner, A. C. Armstrong, J. King I). J. Evans, and Dr Tcichelmann. An apology was made for Mr Eleock’s absence. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. IN WARD COR R ESPOXDENCE. From Onnkaka Iron and Steel Coy., advising that in August next they are commencing the manufacture of cast iron pipes, an asking for opportunity to tender for any Borough requirements. —R ece i ved. From Director of Town Planning, Wellington, forwarding particulars of alteration to system of civic surveys notation.—Received. From Minister of Labour, notifying Wednesday as the Statutory Closing Day in the Borough of Hokitika.—Received. From Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, asking for particulars of plant held by Borough.—Received. From Secretary, Hokitika Harbour Board, pointing out the damage that will probably result if river breaks through the north wall, and intimating that Marine Department bad been approached to obtain an engineer’s report. The Harbour Board solicit cooperation of Council in any measures that may he taken. —Received ; to he supported. From H. E. Jarman, Christchurch, acknowledging Council’s letter of sympathy of the 23rd ultimo, and tendering resignation of his father, Mr John Jarman, as the Manager of the Abattoirs.—Received ; resignation accepted with regret. From Director of Livestock Division, Department of Agriculture, Wellington, intimating that the matter of appointing Mr J. Conning as Manager of the Abattoirs had been referred to the Public Service Commissioner for his approval.—Received and approved. From Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, (forwarding amendment No. 3. Motor Lorry Regulations, 1028. which provides for quarterly payments of license fees hv lorry owners. Received. From Commissioner of Transport. Wellington, forwarding extract tfroui Gazette, showing additional requirements of the« Motor Vehicles Act, 1921. dealing with the erection of “ Compulsory Stop Signs.”—Received. From Clerk, Westland Licensing Committee, forwarding certificates authorising the issue of Publicans’, Wholesale, and New Zealand Wine Licenses; fees to he paid on or before t..e 19th instant.—Received. From Commissioner of Crown Lanas, intimating that in regard to boat sheds at Lake Knnieri, the Medical Officer of Health had reported that a hail should he put oil boat sheds in lliebpresent position, and that owners should be notified to remove their sheds to the site provided at Hans Bay, and suggesting Council carry a resolution in terms of the Medical Omcer’s report.—Received ; a copy ol the letter to he sent to those concerned.

From A. R. Elcock, Hokitika, askin Council’s consent to F. G. Ambcrgcr sub-lolling a portion of Reserve No. 163, Sub-section 2 H.<yise No. "Ov" to G. H. Fearn, K»iterniipi, farmer for a period of five years from the Is- • Juno, 1929, with an option to take over the whole of Mr Amberger’s lease at any time during that period. —Re ceived and approved. From the Medical Officer of Health requesting notices lie served on various hotel-keepers to effect certain repairs in their hotels.—Received and attended to.

From Returned Soldiers’ Association advising a surplus of about £4O from poppy day and asking if Council were prepared to subsidise the amount £ for £ by finding work for returned somiers.—Received and agreed to. It was resolved that the making of concrete pipes he carried out and to confer with the R.’S.A. Itrom Wm. Robinson, asking for permission to erect a kerbside pump o:t his premises, Weld Street. —Received ; granted, subject to u=i*al conditions. From Treasurer reporting receipts £312 10s 9d ; payments £431 18s od ; credit balance £206 4s.—Received. Accounts amounting to £261 2s 7d were passed for payment. TENDERS. Tenders for fencing at abattoirs were received from A. J. King £9 17s fid and J- Duncan, senr. £25. The tender of A. J. King was accepted. Tenders for painting at abattoirs were received from Haussmann Bros. £4B 7s, Scott and Co. £SB 10s od, C. I). Fowler £6O. The tender of Haussmnn Bros, was accepted. Tender for excavation work at Lake Kauieri was opened and declined, the price being considered excessive. REPORTS. • From Manager, Abattoirs, reporting during May there were slaughtered:— 35 cows, 20 heiefrs, 74 bullocks, 182 sheep, 75 lambs, 37 calves, 16 pigs. Condemned, 1 cow, 1 bullock. 1* ees tor month £7B-9s (same month hist year £79 9s fid).—Received. From Acting Manager, reporting various matters attended to and recommending some further small mat tors requiring attention. —Received and approved. FOREMAN’S REPORT. I beg to report the following works were carried out during the month. Drams.—One chain of four-inch earthenware pipes were laid across Gib--sou Quay leading into the river fron (he new brewery being erected there. A four-inch drain was laid across tin footpath at Nightingale’s in Sale St., and 2-J chains of eighteen-inch concrete pipes was laid in Sowell Street drain from the clock tower northwards. Sewell Street drain from HampdeiStreet leading through Cameron’s pad il.,ck was also cleaned out.

Foot>nths.—Weld Street 'footpath from Bealey Street up to Davie Stree. was chipped and gravelled on the south side. Healey Street and Brittan Stree footpath vas chipped between Web Street and Gibson Quay. Camp Stree! footpath between Wharf and Inncrei. Street was gravelled and also the foot path on Gibson Quay was gravelled which had been recently kerbed. Growth.—Growth was cut in Sal Street between Stafford Street and the Quay, in Weld Street, Brittan Street and Davie Street.

A down-pipe 4or roof drainage was laid across the footpath at Ferry s store in Weld Street and four domes put in street corners. Several leaks were repaired during the month.

Average water in reservoir lor the month—4ft. Gin. —Deceived. It was resolved to call tenders for a supply df sand. On the suggestion of Mr Meonan it was resolved to give footpath access in upper Sewell Street.

The Foreman reported on progress of work at Lake Kanieri on laying out new line for pipe line and readiness to call for tenders 'for opening of new pipe line.—Received. It was resolved to call for tenders for 4 sections in one lot.

Mr Duff complained of the state ol FiUherbert Street, which required attention at opce, the pot holes being very bad. f

RESERVE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. [ beg to report that the Reserves Committee met on Wednesday, the 12th instant, inspected the Cemetery and other Reserves, and have to repor as follows: —

Cemetery.—We recommend that the following work he done at the cemetery - (1) That the side drain to connect with the Mental Hospital drain, which the Borough Foreman was authorised To do in August last, he put in hand, as this portion of the cemetery is very wet.

(2) That, a casual man be employed for about a month to assist the Sexton in clearing back the growth of gorse, and scrub as in many places the

new graves are right up to the overgrowth.

(3) To provide more ground for the Church (i, England and Presbyterian portions, that the Town Clerk number up the mi-numbered sections on available area and have the particulars added to the existing maps. (4) There is only one water tap in the Cemetery, which is not sufficient in the summer-time, and if second-hand pipes can be obtained, the water service .should lie extended for a reasonable distance.

Drainage.—The drain in Fitzherbert Street, opposite Whitcombe Square is in a very .unsatisfactory condition, and it should he put in order and subsidy claimed from the Main Highways on the 'work. The drain from the Cemetery, along the Town Belt to the sei, should he dealt with in a similar manner.

Cass Square.—The latrine accommodation at the- centre gate in Weld Street is insufficient, and a now building with sufficient accommodation should he provided in lieu of repairing the existing building. Camping Ground lor Tourist Motorists.— In January last the matter of reporting on suitable reserve to bo equipped as a camping-ground for Touring Motorists was referred to tiic Reserves Committee for report, anrl after reviewing reserves, we consider That the racecourse is the most suitable place for such a camping ground, and we suggest that the Automobii Association and Westland Racing Club be asked to combine to e nip suitable conveniences for a camp eg ground at. the racecourse.' —Received. Considered clause by clause and adopted. ELECTRIC LIGHT. W~ r ' 'lhc Mayor reported to the Council the result of an interview with the .Manager of the Kauieri Electric Ltd. in reference to the request for improved lighting for the town. Th» letter stated that lie was at present in communication with their headquarters in America in regard to substantial alterations and additions to tb • plant whereby the supply of power and the quality would ho greatly increased and improved. The Manager had mentioned that a substantial increase in power was being arranged. 'l’here was also being considered the question of erecting two new dredges to work the ground at Rimu Flat where they had twenty years work in sight. In view of these proposals the Mayor recommended the proposals for renewal of the lighting contract be renewed. The report was received. It was resolved to make further enquiries as to when tho proposed improvements would he carried into effect. Tho Council rose at 9.30 p.m.
