HOKITIKA HARBOUR BOARD

MONDAY, MAY 27th. 'I SPECIAL MEETING!. . •; A special mooting of the Hoard "as held at -I.AO p.m. Present: -Messrs M. J-lousion (Chairman), E. AY. Heenan, .1). Stuart, E. AY. Pichnrds, and Dr. Teichelmann. Jn connection with the request of the Hoard lor the removal of the hull of the Zingara on the south side of the river, which at present was considered a menace to the south wall in the event, cf any heavy .southerly weather, Mr .1, S. kang'dr;], on behalf of, the. present owners, waited on the Bqnrd. Mr Langford stated, that the.manner in which the hull oT the Zingara was, “moored, with three heavy chains, removed any danger of it breaking away ..and injuring the south wall. He had ’had export ad vice ,op the subject Which fully l)pre ,outi this, statement. It was proposed,, howeyer, to dismantle the. hull almost at m.ice and take out good kauri timber in it for other work,, and tlien to destroy the balance of the hull. 'This would bq completed within two months.

Tlic? members of the Hoard considered the explanation satisfactory, but it was decided to visit the south wall on Friday morning at 10 o’clock before com- ■ ing to a decision on the matter, which would also enable the new members to view the position of the hull and also the. proposed work on the south wall, rendered necessary as the result of damage ’thereto when the' Zingara swinging on into the wall carried away a number of the stays at the back of the wall and/rendered it unsafe. In'connection with repairs to the wharf alongside the transit shed the •necessary arrangements were complete 1 'for the work to be carried out at once.

In regard to the position of the north Wall near the. signal station, members had inspected the position since last meeting, and it was generally agreed that the position was a very serious nature and in the event of a sudden flood there was a likelihood of the wall falling into the river and the water hreakTng through at this point and forming a new channel which would have* a very serious eflect to the liaibcur, am! also to the back of Revcll Street.

.Mr Heenan said the work at this point to be carried but effectively would cost more tliaii their finances could meet. JTe suggested an attempt he made to alter the course o'f the river near Kortcgast’s and bring it down along the wharf. If this were done it would remove the present scour and alsp deepen the' berthage at the wharf. Alter discussion as to the substantial nature of the work necessary, it was resolved on the motion of Air Heenan seconded by the Chairman that the .Marine Department be asked to send down a competent engineer to report on tho whole position, tbc best means of remedying the position, and the prospective cost. It was .further resolved to ask the norough Council to give their assistance in asking the Department to send m engineer at once. Other action was deferred until a reply was received to the request to the Department. The Hoard rose at 0..‘10 p.m.
