The Minister of Lands has written to .he Westland County Council as follows relative to the reading of the Poerua run area:—“l have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 2nd. inst. in which you bring under my notice your Council’s suggestion that when tlfe Education Hesor.es in question are sub-divided the matter of loading for roads should he eliminated, and access provided in the ordinary way of roading Crown lands by Government grant. In reply I have to state that my Department is at present looking into nays and means of opening the reserves for settlement, and in connection therewith the Council’s suggestion will receive the most careful consideration.”

The Kokatahi-Koiterangi Winter Show was opened this afternoon. The display is an extremely fine one, and the resources of the district are well shown. Jn every department there is a long list of entries and the competition was very keen. The display is stated to be fully equal to that of lastyear, while the' entries exceed that Ivy a few. Very complete arrangements had been made and the whole Show i.s a very fine one. The Show will he open to-night until 10 p.m. enabling a visit to he made from town, and will be open again to-morrow from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The opportunity of a visit should not be missed. Judging was in full progress up to 2 p.m. and the list 'of prizewinners will appear in our .next issue.

The death occurred suddenly last evening of Mr Alfred Drummond Snedden, of Lydia Street, Greymouth, Inspector of Factories. The late Mr h'neddon.was a native of Auckland an.l about 37 years of age. He was the son of Mr James Sneddon, of Park Pond, Auckland, the proprietor rf the well-known drapery establishment. He had been Inspector of Factories and Awards, etc., ‘for the West Coast, foi nearly three years, with headquaiteis at Greymouth. He was formerly engaged in a similar capacity at Hamilton for several, years. 1 he. deceased went away with the Expeditionary Forces, and had an exceptionally good war record. Only recently he had tendered his resignation from the Labour Department, to take up a position on the staff of the Auckland Technical College. He is survived by a widow who left to-day for Auckland, where the funeral will take place.
