The ex-licensee of a Cobdcn hotel, William Stirling jGiark,' who was’j recently, refused a license ,for a Riccarton hotel, appeared at Greymouth on Saturday and applied to Mr W. ,’Mcldrum, S.M., for a certificate of-.'fit-ness to act as licensee of AlboVn’s Hotel at Inangahua Junction. application was opposed by the for whom Inspector Fitzpatrick''.-ap-peared,. on the groundsV that Clark had several convictions for breaches of. the Licensing Act. ,Mr *1- W. Hannan represented the applicant. After hearing considerable evidence,. Mi Meldrum said that the previous., offences were not of a gross nature, •and' in view of all the circumstances, and’ the splendid character given Clark by the various witnesses, ho did not think he would he justified in further penalising the applicant by refusing him permission to eai;n his living as a licensee. The certificate of fitness was therefore granted.
