SIR JOSEPH WARD.
“GIVING US A FAIR TRIAL.” WELLINGTON, May 10. “On© of the most interesting trips I have taken," was Sir Joseph Ward’s • s opirion of his tonr in Taranaki. “I have met multitudes of people, and their personal enthusiasm has been very heartening to me as head of the new Government. I was very agreeably snrprisd to find the extent to which the settlers are pulling up from past difficulties. They show a spirit of optimism full of beans. Their heavy • obigations of a few years ago have been worked off, and production from the land, in Taranaki lias reached a splendid total this season, equalling £BO per head in value for every man, , woman and child in Taranaki. The fine receptions provide satisfactory evidence that the Government’s ideals meet with approval, aifd I/foUnd there is a keen desire to' have its 'land settlement prosecuted. The. Government is getting a backing, and there is a very nice feeling on the part of former political opponents, who have expressed themselves strongly favourably to giving us a fair trial.”
